lumbini Tour

Lumbini is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautam, the Shakya prince, the eventual Shakyamuni and the ultimate Buddha- the Enlightened One. It is situated on the foothills of the Churiya range in the district of Rupandehi, 300km southwest of capital Kathmandu. Being the birth place of the Buddha, Lumbini has long been exalted as a great centre of pilgrimage for both the Hindus and the Buddhists. It is incidentally the first and foremost site of pilgrimage among the Chatumahasthana. The main attraction of the city is the Sacred Garden, spread over 08 Sq. Kms and possesses all the treasures of the historic area. In the gardens that surrounds the ruins, there is a bo tree where Siddhartha Gautama gained enlightenment and became Buddha. To the west of the Mayadevi Temple, stands the Ashoka Pillar which was erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC to commemorate his pilgrimage to the sacred site. The inscription on it in Brahmi script proves Lumbini as the place where the Buddha was born in 623 B.C. To the south of the Pillar one finds the sacred pond- Puskarni ? the place where Queen Mayadevi took a bath just before giving birth to the Buddha.

Maya Devi Temple
The place where Lord Buddha was given birth by her mother Maya Devi. Here she is seen supporting herself by holding on with her right hand to the branch of sal-tree, with the newly born infant Buddha standing upright on a lotus pedestals on an oval halo. The restored Maya Devi temple was reopened on May 16, 2003 on the 2547th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. Government of Nepal and LDT jointly restored the temple. The ground floor consists of the remains of the foundations of the early Maya Devi Temple that dates back to 3rd century BC.

The Ashokan pillar
This is the place where Lord Buddha was born. A stone representing a horse cause stone, which was erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC.

The Marker Stone
This stone is located in the deeply buried in the sanctum sanatorium which pinpoints the exact location of the birth of Lord Buddha. This was discovered after meticulous excavation of the Maya Devi Temple site in 1996. The exact size of Marker Stone is 704010 cm. This is now covered with a bulletproof glass.

Puskarni ?the Sacred pool
Most people take it as Holy pool. Architecturally the pool has three projecting terraces in the ascending order and is revealed with a fine brick masonry.

The Buddhist Temple
It is built in modern style but there is the image of old Temple. Colorful Art has made it more wonderful and peaceful.
